The Judo Textbook by Hayward Nishioka, details virtually everything a Judoka needs to know about this art’s throws, chokes and grappling techniques, up to and including the mental preparation it takes to become a champion. Originally published in 1979, The Judo Textbook is still considered to be one of the best and most comprehensive books ever written on the subject of Judo. Hayward Nishioka starts this book off with such fundamentals as obi tying, Judo gi folding and all the basic falls, which the author proceeds to demonstrate in clear photographs. Hayward Nishioka started to learn Judo at age thirteen and is able to provide readers with a deep understanding and appreciation of the ‘gentle way’ through this book. The author is a former world team member, a world team Judo coach, and is also known for his gripping skills, his techniques and many competitive wins. Included is a section devoted to some excellent historical photographs of Judo legends, some photos from past Black Belt magazines; some interesting historic photographs of Dr. Jigoro Kano and of some martial arts masters unrelated to Judo. Nishioka earned a black belt in Karate under trainer Tsutomu Oshima, and is a two time Black Belt Hall of Fame member and a 9th degree black belt in Judo. Read more
